Social media…. we have a love/hate relationship with it. Or at least I do! Most people have either used it or are using it in some aspect or another. We may use it for personal, work, keeping connections with family/friends close and far, for creeping frienemies/exes and for keeping up on the trends and news. Whether that is scrolling, posting, friending or just sharing on Face Book. Instagram; we post, like, follow and comment on what other people post. Twitter; we basically say what’s on our minds in tweets, that we can like, follow, comment on and/or retweet! (I am new to this one!) There’s Pinterest; where we save, post, share and love everything from DIY to news/interest articles/blogs. (See that I got blog in there!) There is LinkedIn that we use to keep up to date on professional contacts and personal (So we look more important!) and keep up to date on information we may need to self-improve our work/personal lives. (Never know when we may need these contacts to find a job, connection or learn something to keep us on top of our job!) There’s others like Snapchat, Google+ Whatsapp, Tumblr, and Quora to name a few…. I haven’t learned these yet as I am still a new-bee on the ones above!
I find Face Book to be pretty straight forward coming from a member in the “generation X” category! However upon starting my blog I needed a professional page that would link to my blog site . I needed a 24 year old co-worker to show me how to do this! (Not sure how she knew to do this but it worked!) From there I was okay again… sigh! Now I’ve had Instagram for a while, but I only operate it in a limited way; post a picture add a comment to share and done! Pinterest….wow, I love all the ideas as a mom, organizer fanatic, homesteader, and DIY’er. Now I am learning how to use it for more and even make posts so others can share! (Feeling Proud!) Twitter…. sigh…looks pretty simple but how do you actually follow a post? I mean I only see the persons answer to something… sometimes it could actually mean multiple things! Yes i am using it almost daily but if I click on a tweet (Yup got that right!) I can comment, but can’t seem to find the original tweet or anyone else’s comments to figure it out. I think there must be a way… but I haven’t figured it out yet!
Asking for help…. A Lot!
Now I have asked my 24 year old co-worker and others around me for answers on social media... and to my surprise they know some answers but most of them don't know the answers either.
I have heard lots of complaints about different social media platforms. I have heard from different people and from different generations….. “yeah, I can’t follow the conversation either on twitter.” , “I just read and comment or retweet on things I understand.”, “I don’t get Snap-chat or Twitter…tried one but not the other.”, “oh, I don’t know how you can share from one social media to the other…it happens sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t” (okay on my personal FB I can share to my Instagram, but not on my business account I cannot figure that out….yet!), “I can only post a picture I’m taking in the now on Instagram.” , “YouTube is hard, you need a technician to figure it out” (I up loaded a video with no problem… except country internet it took forever!) I am not saying all of it is hard or easy, I think we just don’t know how it all works and it takes time.. we may not have ….. me included. This makes it frustrating at times and well we get some ohps a lot when things are done wrong… or when on slow internet I… I mean you tap it again to make sure it is still loading (Like a refresh) and oh… you now have 2 pictures/videos of the same post! (I may have done this recently.. but I also figured out a few days later that you can delete one!)
Day 10 Challenge
I just completed this 10 day challenge course on learning/doing new things to do with blogging. The last day we were to think up a title of something current or related to your blog. On this day I was a little bit frustrated with some social media behind the scenes tasks…. and I decided to do a blog called #Social Media and here we are!
Most Important Symbol
Okay some people may need a STOP button (like the Staples easy button) so they think before they post things that may not belong or be taken in a way it was intended to mean. (Texts and tweets are often taken out of context) But I’ve learned all about the pound symbol or number sign (Ohps… I just dated myself!) or what everyone now calls the hashtag symbol!
It was actually first used back in 1988 but only in a platform called Internet Relay Chat in the same way it is now used today. However the first use of a hashtag in social media was in October 2007 by Nate Ridder of San Diego, California who used it to inform people about wildfires in local area; #sandiegoonfire!
Twitter was the first social media platform to hyperlink any tag using it automatically. Of course all the other social media networks added it too. Instagram ran with it and is now the social network with the most significant usage of the hashtag. Where as Twitter prefers no more than 3 hashtags per post, Instagram encourages multiple hashtags. In fact it is not uncommon for people to use 10-20 hashtags in a single post on Instagram. A maximum of 30 are aloud!
Reasons We Use Hashtags?
We use them for the same reason that was first used in 1988 or 2007 and that is to group same/like posts so that they can be found and linked together with similar content. Businesses use them to develop interest in their company, product or belief’s. People use them to gain more momentum in a particular movement, topic, or to allow people to link to them with similar posts. The biggest reason in using hashtags whether you are an individual person, blogger or business is to gain a bigger, wider and more adverse following who will be able to connect/find/follow you with the help of a hashtag. This can be one of the easiest ways to advertise your business, personal thoughts and or drive attention to your blog/site.
Top 25 Most Popular Instagram Hashtags
Remember that depending on the season and the current happenings another hashtag may be at top of the list like #summer, #election or currently #winter! I am told that using any of the most popular hashtags will help your post, however you won’t stand out. The number 1 hashtag #love has been used by over 1 million people, making it hard to find your post and it is way to general to link you to those you wished to be linked too. It was suggested that I use 1-3 of the most popular if they apply but to add in other ones that may dial in better to what my post is about and give people a way to actually find me to connect with me. Something to think about when using all the well used hashtags. Do you want to be found? If so, use other niche hashtags or add to your popular ones such as: #lovemyboys, #hubbylove, and/or #doglove !
Love it and Hate it! We are using it everyday now. Not just those in the work field. Kids are using it to play games, watch videos, learn (I hope), keep up to date with their friends and relatives (This includes with their parents!) Mom’s and Dad’s are using it for work, pleasure, learning and connection. Grandparents and older adults are also using it now! It is a great tool to keep connected, send pictures, letters and chat live with those who are far and near. It is an instant way to communicate more often than ever before and often in a very personal way.
When it works… we love it, but it often doesn’t and most of the time its human error or weather (Where I live) which can create frustration and sadness especially for those who don’t really understand it but use it. Now I am technologically challenged for sure but I can also do quite a bit on the computer and on social media. As I continue to learn and well lets be honest sometimes I just click, open, close and try different things to make things work that don’t currently do, I am realizing that technology is a wonderful tool as is social media for a blogger. Now all I have to do is spend more time on it and I am sure I will get the hang of it and be able to use it more efficiently at least some of the time.
Also just want to holler out to tech support at both WP help (Under It’s a Lovely Life umbrella) and to Bluehost support, I couldn’t have done this without you, because I would have thrown the towel in ….. or at the least…. out the window!
